One of our goals is to build the business without investing much money, and without having to install a lot of Web software. So we're using a (free) blogger.com blog for our main Web site, and a free storefront at Zazzle.com to sell our merchandise. Total cost so far: about ten dollars for the domain registration. Sweet!
(By the way, the inspiration from this approach comes from "Internet Riches" by Scott Fox, which we recommend highly.)
Artsy Android and I have decided to take a free-form approach, inviting our friends to join us and create whatever items seem good to them. With luck, the results will be eclectic but good. For example, one friend (Robert Plamondon) runs a free-range egg farm and a small publishing company. Another (Beth McBeth) is an artist and student. And so it goes.
Another decision we made was to go live when things were still obviously under construction. Our custom artwork, spiffy layout, avatars, etc. will just have to catch up. The advantage of the approach is that it gets our hands dirty right away, giving feedback and letting us zero in on what works. Pardon the mess, but it's all part of the process!
I'll talk more about the process in later posts.
