Romance and Fandom

A lot of people don't understand how closely fandom and romance are linked. This is a topic on which I'm qualified to speak, since Mrs. Fixbot has been a rabid fangirl for decades (and, in consequence, has turned me into a true fanboy).

Fandom tends to involve deep crushes on fictional characters, or sometimes the actors who portray them. This alarms people who aren't in the know, who think they have to compete with idealized characters who aren't even real! But it doesn't work that way. Fans have plenty of passion left over for their real-life partners. Trust me on this! I've taken it upon myself to spread the good word about this.
